1970 – 3–24 May, Sofia, Ghena Dimitrova was the sole winner of the First Prize and Gold Medal in the Competition for Young Opera Singers. 57 singers from 24 countries took part in the competition.

1971–1974 – Specialized in La Scala’s school in Milan under Renata Cardosio and Renato Pastorino. She was also trained by Gina Cigna.

1971 – 15–17 October, Tours, France, International debut as Amelia in Verdi’s La forza del destino under a one-year contract for the 1971-72 season, including 24 performances in France (in Rouen, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Mulhouse, Toulouse, Marseille, Nice, Tours and Rennes ).

1972 – 5–10 June, Treviso, First Prize in the Fourth International Competition for Young Opera Singers for the role of Amelia in Un ballo in maschera. The jury was chaired by Toti dal Monte, and Giulietta Simionato and Ferruccio Tagliavini were jury members. Alongside Hristina Angelakova, who was awarded for the role of Ulrika, and tenor Ottavio Garaventa, Ghena Dimitrova sang in three performances of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera in Treviso, in the autumn of the same year.
